Knowing when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em isn’t just a beneficial poker skill or a lyric from an old country song – it’s also an important concept when it comes to driveways. While patching and sealing are quick and effective fixes for aesthetic problems, knowing when it’s time to actually replace your driveway can save you loads of time and money. Luckily, your Atlanta asphalt paving and concrete experts here at Prime Paving Contractors are here to help. How do you know when it’s time to contact a paving company? We’ve compiled a list of three warning signs. If you see any of them, your driveway’s problems are more than just cosmetic:
1. It’s changing color. You know it’s time to replace your work flannel when it begins to look washed-out and faded. The same rule applies to driveways. One of the first indicators that your driveway may need replaced is a change in color. A change in color may indicate heat or water damage.
2. It’s cracking up. Considering the daily beating your driveway takes, a little cracking is inevitable, and it’s nothing to worry about. But once you start spotting cracks that are more that a quarter of an inch wide, it’s time to call the paving company. The larger the cracks, the more water can seep into them, and that can cause some serious damage to your driveway.
3. It’s not a teenager anymore. Your driveway might seem to be holding up pretty well, but if it’s transitioned from its teens into its twenties, the time has come to say goodbye. It’s likely that serious problems will begin to pop up – and they’re going to persist. Asphalt driveways should be replaced after about 12 years, and concrete driveways after about 15.
